Presenting the other side of the argument, the seat belt laws are there to try to protect idiots who don't wear them.

It has been proven time and time again that seat belts save lives. Sure, "live free or die", but when you get married or enter into a long-term relationship of any sort, its not about just you anymore. And to continue by the "live free or die" motto at that point is downright selfish and pretty liberal minded.

Is it the government sticking their noses into our business? Sure. Is it a necessary evil in this case? Yes.

Granted, the fines can get pretty ridiculous, but some sort of fine is necessary IMO.

My wife, a RN at one of the local hospitals, works in the ICU. She sees countless people come in who were ejected from their cars, and end up paralyzed or dying because they weren't wearing their seat belts.

The most recent story was a couple who had been married a total of one week. He was driving, she was riding shotgun. They got into an accident, rolled the car. He was wearing his seat belt, he only had a few minor scrapes and bruises. She wasn't wearing her seat belt and got ejected, did something to her spine up just below the neck. She is paralyzed from the neck down now for the rest of her life.

well, decided to change my shocks yesterday, bolts were rusted on, and used the impact to get them off. I made the cardinal mistake when I did that. I held on to the other side of the bolt with a stubby wrench. hit the trigger on the gun threw the wrench off the other side and put a 2 inch gash across my cheek.... was not a fun moment. Now got up this morning to change the front ones, and its snowing.

Geez jason no need to be a downer like that
I personally dont believe in seat belts. I used to use them religiously, but the last time i wore one I was sitting up side down on the road in a honda prelude with a broken collar bone. I believe its a personal choice as to whether or not people should wear them.
But, getting stuck in a death trap of a car for over two hours because of seat belts royally killed my faith in them.

I agree with jason about wearing seat belts. I always have worn one and got into an accident last summer. If I had not been wearing a seat belt I probably would have been messed up pretty bad. Since I did wear one all I got was a broken thumb.

I do believe that seat belts safe lives but I don't know if people should be forced to wear them.

I also agree with Jason. But the bottom line is, it should be up to you, and how you deal with consequences of your decision. We in NH also have no helmet law, but they are not trying to pass any law for that, instead they are trying to pass a law restricting straight pipes on bikes because some are too loud! HUH ?

No offense intended here, but would you rather have been upside down in a car for two hours with a broken collar bone, or ejected from the car and decapitated when you came down, neck landing on the guide wire from a power line pole?

The answer to that is easy. Only thing is, it still should be your choice.

I apologize for how strong I am coming on here, I obviously have really strong opinions on the issue.

But you're right zman17, it really should be a choice, not a law.
