Default Motor Swap

Hi all. I am new to this sight. Seems to be a lot of dodge lovers here, so I figured this would be a good place to get some answers. I have a 1998 1500 4x4 5.9 with a bad motor. I think it is wrist pin. Anyways, I found a 5.9 motor out of a 2001 1500 2 wheel drive. Should I use the 1998 computer or 2001 computer? Is there any other problems I might run into? Thanks in advance

if your going to swap, the 01 motor into the 98, keep the 98 pcm. I do think the starter connection is different on a 98 but that isn't a big deal. Use the 98 starter if you have to or rig up something for that one wire if they are different. (I broke my solenoid wire plug and in my search for a new connector in a junkyard, the 98 looked different) As far as I know the 98 sensors have the same connectors as the 01 everywhere else. This shouldn't be bad at all. Pull your bad 98 motor out. Compair them side by side for your sensors and just retrofit whatever you need to from the 98 to the 01 to make it work. I don't expect you to run into any major problems at all. Good luck!

I thought the pcm's were programmed different. Hence why you need to tell them all your trucks info when you buy a new pcm. If that's the case wouldn't the engine potentially run like *** if its not programmed to that engine?

Ah yeah the engine is out of an 01. So the pcm is programmed to the 01 not the 98 which is what I was getting at.

I am having similar problems. What is your engine doing making you think it is the wrist pin?

Does it sound like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFF8B...eature=related

Default motor swap

Truck started knocking at startup and when I hit around 2000 rpms. Mechanic said it was timing chain, but I didnt believe him. I started pulling plug wires one at a time until the knock stopped. It has to be rod bearing or wrist pin. It almost sounds like 2 pool ***** getting smacked together. The sad part is I just traded in my reliable dakota for this thing. I didnt put a 100 miles on it before it started knocking.

Like PC said before, only use the acual '01 motor and swap everything else from your '98 onto the '01 motor. I am talking about things like sensors, wiring harness, starter, fuel injectors, etc...
