Default trans interchange

First I would like to thank those who responded to my last question. The new question is , is the only difference in a 360/5.9 and the 318 transmission the torque converter. the reason i ask is its very hard to find a used tranny off a 5.9 here. and i have not the funds to take it to the shop for a rebuild. ITs a 1997 1500 automatic 2wd thanks for your patients and replys

I could be wrong but I think even the TC is the same between the 5.2/5.9. You'll want a '96 and up tranny though due to a change in electronics.

+1 audio!

Anything I have ever read across this forum says that the 318 and 360 take the same trans. 96'? and up are the 46RE's. I believe the older ones might be the 46RH's? Not positive on the older ones, but I know that the newer ones are more electronic shifting.

The flywheels are different not the tourque convertor. The 318 is internally balanced and the 360 is externally ballanced.

I am under the belief the torque converters ARE different but a weight can be knocked off the 5.9 to work on a 5.2. I do know that it seems all the trannys are one year (especially 96 and up models) only with no year to year interchange. I'm sure the electronics are the reason but do not know whats involved to make one year work in another etc I'm sure some tranny shop guys on here can get into the details, but as far as a drop in and go, you better make sure you know what your doin or you'll be gamblin with your money and time. good luck

The part numbers seem to be the same between the two motors with the only exception being there is a lock up convertor and a non lockup.

The torque converters are pretty much the same. The stall speeds are different, but if you putting in a used trans then it wont really matter much. Just match the good TC to the old one, if the good one has a weight and the old one doesnt just grind the welds and knock it off.

If its the other way around, you COULD take the weight off of the old one and weld it onto the good one. I wouldnt recommend it, but if youre that tight up for money, do what you gotta do.

You can interchange any 46RE (as long as the bellhousings are the same), all you have to do is change out the wiring harnesses, its really not that hard. If you can change out a transmission you can swap the wiring harnesses no problem.
