Default Help Me Find A Cam.......

I have a 98 Sport with the 360 and an auto. I've got the appearence done on it and now am after some more power. I put in a 2.5" leveling kit and added some nitto terra grapplers in 35x12.50x16 on some Ion 16x8 wheels.

I noticed that the timing cover is leaking slowly and figured while I have it torn apart I might as well add a new timing chain, and since I have it torn down that far I should get a cam too. But I also plan on adding a poormans TB, pacesetter LTs and catted y pipe, roller rockers, and gears later this summer.

But what cam should I get for my truck? I don't want anything radical, more along the lines of a torquer cam like idle-5500 rpms. I pull a smaller camper around in the summer as well as a car trailer throughout the year and am always hauling something around, so something with a little more punch off of idle would be nice.

I'd also like a little bit of a lope to the idle, but nothing crazy and I don't want to have to change the torque converter if I don't have to.

But I guess that it and thanks in advance

here are sum great cams
http://www.hughesengines.com/Index/p...1=Q2Ftc2hhZnQ=

if the lift on the cam is hight you will not need 1.7RR and can keep you 1.6 you have now.

1.7rr are i a way a small cam ( more lift) and will give you a little lope at idle

also how many miles on the truck?, new cam alot of miles should buy new lifters.

and if your going to pull the intake off, go and do the "kegger mod" and this http://www.hughesengines.com/Index/p...p?partid=22220

oh the towing cam http://www.hughesengines.com/Index/p...p?partid=22220

Another option is the KRC206, its a 4x4 tow cam. Maybe a better choice than the Hughes IMHO. Buddies n I do like/run Hughes parts on our stroker motors but wont run their cams.

for most aftermarket cams you will HAVE to run a tuner. comp offers quite a few for these trucks, you can download CamQuest from their site.

ive always been a fan of Woods performance cams.. they are a little pricey but they do make an awesome cam.. idk if they make it for our magnums, but they do for harleys and super chevy motors.. they are a higher torque cam and put out amazing hp and torque numbers.. most times they have cams that worrk for stock heads too.. and like i said.. theyre lift is huge. they are made by andrews cams to woods specifications, and if you follow drag racing at all you should of heard the name Woods. just go to google and type Woods performance cams.. itll pop up and look at the Knight Prowler line.

I looked at summit today and found the mopar performance cam and lifter set for $520 and the operating range is idle-6200 rpms

A little pricey, but not too bad

That's gotta be crap, I've never seen a cam with that large a RPM powerband. I don't think it's honestly possible, it's going to be lacking on one end of the rangeor the other, just need to know which end. I think that the "real" power band for most cams is about 2-3K max. You might get a little more at the extremes that gives the manufactor a little bragging rights and allows them to make thier claims legally, but it's probably not much.

I'll say this about KRC. They're a bit more honest and realistic on the gains and powerbands than most I've seen.

I agree 100% with what you have said. I know that a cam cannot make power in an rpm range like that, but you can get a cam that makes good power throught the rpms.

For instance the cam in my car says that it makes power from 1500-5500 rpms, but in reality it makes power from about 3300-6000 rpms, but I have 1.6 roller rockers instead of the 1/5s where comp gets their #s from.

But I also plan on doing the kegger mod and the plenum while everything is apart. I have been planning on getting parts here and there until I get everything. I might order the cam this weekend if I can make up my mind, but if not I'll order the headers and y-pipe and get the cam in a couple more weeks.

Thanks for the help guys
