Default Spark plugs really matter?

Does the type or brand of spark plugs really matter? If so, could you recommend some for a 96 ram 5.9

NGK, Champion.
Whatever as long as you don't use Bosch.

think maybe because they come stock in lawnmowers that means that the company is so good that they chose to expand their endeavors to more consumers? a spark is a spark, whether its in a lawn mower or a truck.

Experience (with these users) has shown a problem with certain brands (and styles) of plugs in these trucks. Bosch (especially Platinum +4) have been shown to be problematic as well as (I think) some Autolite. Champion Truck, Champion Copper, NGK (Iridium ?) ... all winners.

Bosch +2 & +4 are a poor design, I would never install a set. Nothing wrong with the Bosch plats.

Most important thing, make sure the cap/rotor are fresh, wires are good, routed correctly and the plugs are indexed. Any plug Ive ever installed in my Indy, Ive always indexed them. I found both the NGK and Champion the idle was rougher than with either the Bosch plats or Autolite coppers.
I had Bosch Plats in my bone stock 5.9, with bolt ons only, no power adder when it ran a 13.99 et.(Oct/01). Autolite 3923 coppers for the 12.91 et.(0ct/05)

Without indexing the plugs, any comparisons are useless IMHO.

Your lawnmower comparison is bad. I have 2 Briggs-Stratton push mowers that will start on 2nd pull cold. I ran some Bosch spark plugs in both of them for 1 mowing, 4-5 pulls to start.

So, yes, really Champion.

Another vote for Champion, and another agreement that the lawnmower argument is lame. These trucks came stock with Champions.

doesnt really matter IMO. I have tried bosch, champions and autolites. Never liked the Bosch, or the Autolite double plats. Am currently running the autolites 3293 plugs, and have 15,000 miles on them now. no problems yet.

Another +1 for the Champion recommendation. Not only do I recommend the Champion plugs, I suggest using the exact stocker plug that came in the vehicle from the factory. The list of reasons why for this is long but the simplest of them is that the manufacturer did truly do all engine testing using the stock plug equipped from the factory.

On my Gen 1 Durango, 4.7L, I was in a pinch a few months back, wanting to change the plugs before a long road trip. All I could get on the quick was Autolite plugs. The D was fine on the highweay but idled a bit rougher on the Autolites. Noticed about a 0.3 mpg reduction as well. Swapped out to the stock Champions about a month ago and she runs like a champ again at 120,000 miles!
