Extra Lights????
Ok so i have a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 and i am wanting to add some extra lights to it. First off what is the easiest way to wire the lights into the truck with out putting the wires in through the window lol. Also i am wanting to wire lights in with the current lights so when i turn on the existing lights they will come on and work with them..... Any and all help would be great thanks
decide where you want to mount them.
decide what kind you want.
decide how you want to control them. its usually best to put them on a separate sw.
run a hot wire from your battery to that location. place a fuse near the battery. if you're going to wire up more than one thing, install a small 4-8 circuit fuse block for convenience and to make it look good, rather than like crap.
run a control wire from the cab to that location.
find a place along the way where those wires can meet.
install a relay there and connect the ground.
install a switch in the cab.
secure all wires and wrap in wire loom.
enjoy.

I just spliced all mine into my existing wiring. All my add ons are LED so I'm not worried about pulling too many amps through the wires. If you are going to install regular lights you may want to consider separate circuits as they draw a lot more amps. I have 3 LED lights on each side of my truck, 5 in the tailgate and I custom installed 5 cab lights on the roof.
dhvaughan- how do i get from the inside of the cab to the engine bay or to the bed of the truck with out adding extra holes to the fire wall? and is there a way that i can add lights on to the same circut with my current lights with out really screwing anything up?
Behind the brake pedal (or in that vicinity) is a large rubber plug in the firewall. When I installed my fog lights, I punched a hole in that to route wires to a switch in the cab. Its up, out of the way, so no one can see it unless they get their head down underneath by the pedals, and its easy.
Another way to do it (and I've been toying with this idea in my head) would be to use a relay for your additional lights. Say you wanted them to come on when you turned on your parking lights, you'd wire them up to the relay(s) and draw power straight from the battery, and splice the "activation wire" from the relay to one of the wires going to the parking/turn lamps. Or the headlamp wires if you want them to come on with the headlamps.
+1 for using a relay or new wires, do not use the stock wiring. You'll fry your headlamp switch.

+1. the big rubber plug is a hole for the clutch linkage. comes in very handy.
you can splice on LED's due to low amp draw.
do not splice on regular lights to existing wiring. your headlights and fog lights already draw through the switch w/o a relay (which is bad). do not add any more to it, or you'll experience a melt down.
a little fuse block like this can provide a nice place to connect more wiring. mount it near the battery, and connect it. then wire you accessories to it.

Yea like I did (dam hella) I have one headlight at full the other is at like 25%. Now I just need to wire my driving light. Now that I just thought of it I have a lot time off the next few day I know what I will be doing.
