I recently purchased an 01 dodge ram 1500 sport off-road with roughly 105,000 miles on it. The truck has the 5.9 with the 46re automatic and 4.10 gearing. The truck runs like a champ, except i've been noticing that when i am cruising at highway speeds in overdrive it occasionally likes to jump 100rmps or roughly and return to it's normal engine rpms. it tends to do this more when cruise control is activated, and when i hit bumps it occasionally causes the transmission to do this also. I have noticed the problem after the truck has been running for a little while at operating temperature. I was wondering if there is anything i can do to fix this.

Its not necessarily your transmission. I'd check the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) first.

 

ok thanks...your the second person that has mentioned that...i think i may purchase one and put it on...would it make a diffence of doing it more when it's warm? the tranny doesn't slip at all either

Does a TPS ever throw codes? Had my Ram in for trans work in Jan, (60k on the odo) and ended up changing every sensor in it, running a new wiring harness, and changing the pcm. Ran great for a couple months, just threw the same codes a bit ago, took it in, they identified the TPS and changed it. Running good for now (knock on wood)

 

i also had a tps prob got a new one but it didnt help for three days dealer said that was normal so be aware if it isnt instant it takes like 50 miles or so

 

The TPS is the most common item that would cause the problem your having, there have been a few cases where the wiring harness inside the transmission rubs against the case and over time causes a short with the wire that controls the lock up clutch for the torque converter, which interns causes the clutch to momentarily disengage causing a jump in RPM. This is very uncommon.

 

The computer, IIRC, has to "learn" the new TPS, so yep, may take a few dozen miles or maybe a little more.

I suppose if the TPS really went bonkers, it might throw a code, but if its just barely acting up (sticking a little or something), it may not.

I found this forum while searching for answers to my problem. You guys sound knowledgable......so here we go. Check engine light came on, I took it in. My buddy, who is the service department manager, told me it was a transmission error code. Wasn't sure exactly what was causing it, but it could very well be a fluke or even work itself out. I have a Hypertech programmer, so I hooked it up. Came up with code P1740. I had to do a little research to find it is for "Clutch Temperature Controller". And that led me here..... The only thing I noticed different when driving is in overdrive, the RPM's are about 200 higher. Any suggestions?
