Default 1998 Tranny technical questions

I have 1998 Ram 5.2l and have a couple of questions concerning the tranny:
  1. Does my tranny have a "flow control" thing in the cooler lines that fail? Is it something that I can change out? If so how hard is it?
  2. What type of transmission fluid should I be using? Synthetic?
  3. Will adding a transmission cooler help? If so what kind and where would you get one?
I have just over 100,000 miles on my truck and want to try to protect my tranny from dying like so many I have read about.

Hi !

? #1 yes, look in the DIY to eliminate it.

?#2 ATF +4

?#3 Yes. B&M makes a nice one, look on Summit or Jeg's for that one and other options.

Her's the link for the check valve delete, https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...ve-delete.html

You also might want to consider installing a drain plug in the tranny pan. Makes life alot easier. IMO, if they put them on from the factory, people would change the fluid more often, hence, less blown tranny's. But, of course they already know that I'm sure.

Holy crap! $48.00! The actual trans cooling line (the steel one and the rubber one) with the check ball in it is only like $26.00 at Murrays

so would u guys just replace the check valve...or completely get rid of it...seems like just getting rid of it is a better deal...as for the cost of the hose and control valve...the $48.00 is without the ball right and the $28.0 is one with...less is more? Kinda like a diet I guess...should I buy the $48.00 or the $28.00

I think if you look at AIMs write up you can make your own for like 20-30 without the check ball. That is the way I would/will go.
