Went to tranny shop the other day to ask about the band adjustment. Now my truck is a 2001 with one twenty four thousand miles and bands were never adjusted before as far as I know. He told me to loosen the lock nut, turn the adjuster 1 turn clockwise (to tighten) and tighten the lock nut. He said that is what he would do if I had him do it. He said the procedure where you tighten to 72 in lbs and back off 2 turns is for new or newer transmissions. What do you guys think?

I think it's good that you didn't pay him to do it wrong.

Specifically talking about the band that has adjustment screw on outside of trans. This is a trans shop that has been there for years and seems to be doing a lot of business.
