I've had one fail-safe and sure enough it failed. It did fail safe (open) though.

People don't plan on overheating their truck or car. From my experiance, it almost ALWAYS happens when you LEAST expect it...or for that matter when you don't want it to.
thanks again everyone...
All thermostats are supposed to fail open.

To agree with the previous posters, seems like a bad stat, unless of course you accidentally got it turned around when you installed it....

If that's the case, still say it was a bad stat...lol

i dont understand how you could get it turned the wrong way...if you took it out, i mean, thats common sense. i had the same problem for a while...it was doing that, i changed my thermostat and it didnt do it so drastically but still did it a little (like what you're talking about) so i just let it ride for a little bit...it eventually worked itself out. idk how though.

Am I missing something? The truck's not overheating ... the temp on the gauge is floating a bit but it's not out of line. Why would this be a bad stat?

Could be lack of a breather hole in the stat causing this to happen.
It could also be his fan clutch too if its starting to warm up in his part of the country.

Sounds like it's upside down to me too. Did you put it in pointy side up or butt end up?

I know enough to know that I installed it the correct way. Hey VW&DODGE, my sisters 03 diamante's stat failed. it stuck shut. she had to have it towed home, 100 miles away which cost her $400. The main thing that concerns me is that it warms up to temp a little too fast. It just bugs me, is all. That never happened with any of my other stats I installed. I'll see how it goes.

I understand what you're saying, OK? My dad is a retired automotive engineer (back in 1985) and in the 1990's he commented to me that he'd been hearing more and more of t-stats failing closed. He said that was absolutely unheard of up through his retirement and he wondered if QA was lacking.

My point is that all t-stats are supposed to fail OPEN. Period, end of story.

I was always told to put a Tylenol in the tstat so it would be open and by the time the pill melted the air should be bled out. Think I've only tried it once though. Thats another part I rarely change
