Default How to till gears and change speedometer

Hey im thinking of getting gears and cant decide between 4.11 or 4.56 but cant find out what my truck has. The sticker under my hood says i have 3.55s but on the gear calc stite says i have 4.11s. Because when im driving with over drive turned off im at 2400rpms at 60mph with 35s and jaws gear calc says this is 35s with 4.11s. But my speedometer is still right and i dont know if the guy who owned it before me put the gears in. Im also wondering if i do swich to 4.11s or 4.56s how do i get my speedometer correct its a 97 too.

jack the rear end up and put a chalk mark on your drive shaft, and another chalk mark on your tire. Turn the tire one full revolution and count how many times your drive shaft spins. If it spins 3 and a half times you have 3.55 years. If it spins a hair over 4 times you have 4.10 gears.

Oh and it would be a good idea to block your front tires when doing this.

I didn't realize you could change speedometer gears in our trucks. Can't tell you how happy I was to find out how simple it was to do in my TJ when I had the lift/tires installed.

I thought you needed a programmer, but I could be wrong.

Newer trucks need a programmer, older ones need a different sized gear in the speedo deal. I think '98 was the cut off.

Nothing is need in the newer trucks (when only the gearing is changed) due to the speed be read by the tone ring on the ring gear. But, when tire size is changed, the computer will need to be reprogrammed.
