Default Volt meter fluctuates

As the title says, my volt meter fluctuates. This has been going on for about a year now. I was just curious if anyone else had or has this problem? If so, how do you go about fixing it. Before I had this problem, my volt meter would sit dead on 14 in the middle and would not flinch. Now it's a bit above 14, I would say about 17, and sometimes when I'm at a stop light (during the day with no lights on), it will start to bounce around from 12 to 17 like a heart beat. So far I've installed a red top optima battery, replaced the belt, checked the tension on the belt and have had the alternator tested. It's still good. What could be causing this condition? Any input would be appreciated.

Are you running sub's or amp's? That could do it.

Bone stock...the only mods I have are in the engine and are mechanical. Throttle body mod and so on.

Alternator might be going? What about getting a new battery in that thing?

Didn't you read all of the first posting? I put in an optima red top. Even though my other battery was still good, I had it for 4 years, it was on its way out. Plus, the red top was on sale for 100 buck so I couldn't pass it up. They usually go for 125 to 150

Last summer, optima was running a promotional for $25 off there batteries and Costco had them for $125. I HAD to get it!!! It weighs a lot less then my Stealership Mopar battery. As far as the alt is concerned, the little black box behind the alt is the volt meter, right? The one that connects to the negative battery cable.
