Default unknown sound

Hey Guys,

Have a question for you all, I recently took my 2001 5.9 1500 4x4 94,000miles off road and now I am getting a whineing sound coming from the engine. Today I changed my oil, after I went I did go to the car wash and wash the motor. I sprayed wd-40 on all the pulleys, engine looks clean pulleys do too. I would think if any mud got into the pulleys it would be out by now, has been 4 days or so. Any ideas????

Thanks,

are you sure it's coming from the engine? I had mine stuck a couple weeks ago and got a bad whine/screeching sound and it was a rock wedged between the front rotor and the backing plate. I drove it for a few days thinking it would go away, and even took the pressure washer to it, but eventually had to pull the front wheels to find it.

Tension pulley? You might try checking your fluids. Also, did you get a lot of mud in the engine bay?

How much of it got on your alternator? Could that be what your sound is?
And, how many grooves are you on your belt?

remove the belt and feel/spin each pulley, there should be no wobble, no ringing sound, no catchy feeling. especially check water pump and clutch fan. clutch should be sort of tight feeling and when belt is on and engine stops, fan should stop and not freewheel.

if you got water or mud up in the fan, the silicon? clutch might have crapped out.

That was going to be my next thing to do, sounds like you and I were thinking on the same page. I checked the fan clutch, fan is not free spining. Tonight I checked the idle pulley with the belt on seems fine but hard to say with the belt on. This makes me mad you try to have some fun off road and now I get punished.
