Default Trouble Code P0171

So I got a CEL today, P0171. I looked it up and here's what I read.

"P0171 1/1 Fuel Sys Lean" - https://dodgeforum.com/forum/1582302-post3.html

I was driving along, CEL comes on, and at the next light, I felt a lot of vibration at idle, and the engine just didn't sound right. No noticeable loss of power, just vibration. I also smelled what smelled like unburned fuel. The exhaust smelled really really rich, which I thought was odd because that code says "lean".

Any idea's? I'm tempted to just throw it into the shop and get it taken care of because I have to smog anyways, but perhaps I could save myself a few $. Truck has 103k on it, all regular maintenance.

on my ford explorer, this code was an intake leak. its triggered by the 02 sensor. the rich smell might have been associate with the pcm giving more fuel to try and correct the lean condition. when it max's out the fuel, and its still lean, then it trips the code.

JUST dealt with this issue this weekend. The p0171 code refers to the DETECTION of a lean fuel mix that the computer then corrects by richening up the mix. The problem here is that the mix was never lean to begin with and now you have a rich mix. Your 1/1 O2 sensor is throwing a bad reading. That is what the "1/1" stands for in the code - that sensor is making the reading. Change the 1/1 sensor. Should be about $90. It is located immediately under the driver side floor board in the exhaust manifold. Get on your back and slide under the vehicle right behind the driver side front tire. Look up and you should see two sensors. Choose the one closest to the front of the vehicle.

He was full of great information if you wanted to know anything about HIDs or electrical, but he always seemed to be just naturally angry. He was always spoiling for a fight.
