Which thermostat?
I'm in the middle of placing an order with Summit, and I found that if I buy a Hypertech "Power Stat" thermostat, they waive the delivery and handling charge of $11.95. The thermostat is either approximately $5 or $6 (depending on which one I buy), so I'm actually saving money by buying a t-stat. But, I don't know which one I should get.
Has anyone used this brand of t-stats before? I don't want to buy a junk one, but I know nothing of this brand. They also offer 4 different thermostats for a 1998 5.9L, two of them are 180 degree, the other two are 160 degree. The part #'s for the 160 degree are Hyp-1000 and Hyp-1012. The part #'s for the 180 degree t-stats are Hyp-1018 and Hyp-1026. The product details don't seem to differ, so I don't get what the difference is. I'm hoping someone will have some experience with these and help me out so I can get my order placed.

Don't buy a 160. Yr truck will still think is warming up and it will keep it in what's called an open loop. The computer will give it more gas trying to bring up the temp. 195 was stock from the factory.
A lot of guys on this forum have had good luck with the 180 (me included). It still allows it to get warm enough to close the loop so that it will lean out and run normal, plus it gives you a few degrees cooler air under the hood (and more trans cooling capacity).
Changed mine a year ago, and I live in Kansas, seeing temps of 100+, down to -20, never had a single problem!

He hit the nail right on the head. Don't buy a 160 t-stat. I run a 180 and everything runs great.

When I first read about the 180 stat no one mentioned a possible CEL. Then of course I got it from the engine not getting warm enough. You'll prolly be ok until Fall/winter. Then when the weather gets cold maybe and only a maybe.......a CEL for you.
I'm the minority so you should be ok.

Yea, changing the tstat is fairly easy. I just put one in my Durango and no CEL.
I scrape the gasket off the tstat housing then clean the rest with a wire wheel then use a flat file to make sure the gasket surface is flat. Then I use a thin layer of that tar like gasket maker to hold the gasket to the housing and reinstall everything.
