From someone that hates painting is herculiner hard to get a consistant layering or does it pretty much smooth itself. I have the OEM plastic liner but really like the look of the herculiner type finishes. I've heard it gets very hot and dries very fast is this true? (By hot I mean you can't use run of the mill roll on brushes)

No it doesn't get really hot, unless you leave it out in the sun. And no it doesn't really dry that quickly. I did all the prep work and a coat in one day, and then did the final coat the next morning. Came out great and is still holding up great. If you are going to go with any type of roll on or spray on bed liner it is a good idea to get the UV protectant coat as well, so it won't fade over time. Just remember, its all in the prep, you don't want gouges but you do want a nice rough surface for the herculiner.

Is the UV protection an additional layer or does it mix in the base coat?
I haul alot of cabinet grade plywood for my woodworking so is there a way to tone down the roughness to prevent ruining my plywood? Also does anyone know of a website to find herculiner for the best price.

No the UV layer comes in a different can, and is applied after the herculiner itself is dry. I would think the UV layer would take away some of the abrasiveness of the herculiner, if not you could just throw down some sheets or something. I picked up herculiner at Autozone for around 80 dollars, comes with a gal of herculiner, rollers, scotch pad, etc...

I used herculiner on mine. I sprayed it with an electric paint gun with wide nozzle. It has stood up great over the years.
