318 to 360 swap

Smile 318 to 360 swap

I currently drive a 2000 Ram Sport 4x4 with the 318. I just got a wrecked 2001 Ram 4x4 with the 360 in it. My question is besides the 360 and the PCM what all do I need to swap the 360 in place of my 318. Im wanting to do this for more power. Thanks for any advice.

Just asking for a second opinion because I have never swaped a 318 to a 360 before. Wouldn't I also need the torque convertor out of the 2001 360 truck to go with it?

Yes. 360's are externally balanced. And while not an issue with magnum engines, with older LA engines, the driver side motor mount is different.

I just recently swapped the tranny from a 318 dodge to a 360 dodge ram. Swapped the torque converters too just so that there were no issues with balancing. About 2 weeks later. That Piece of Shgt 360 threw a rod. If that 318 is running well, I'd forget ABOUT DOING THAT swap. Lots of labor, lots of fluid to lose, and hardly worth it if you were to ask me. Maybe that 360 of mine was never in too good of shape to begin with but, hey, I've got 3 318 motors that all run like champs. Too bad the trannys don't though... Anyhow, 170,000 on one, 107,000 on another, and 75,000 on the last. those 318s just don't stop. pretty much the only ones been serviced regularly has been the one with 75 on the clock, but the other two don't show any signs of age. Thus, im my opinion, I think those 318s are great and to swap one for a 360 for that extra 20-30 horsepower just isn't worth it especially if you're not certain of the condition of that 360 to begin with. you didn't mention any history on it, so I can only guess that its used and likely has it's own issues.

Really want some extra juice? Drop a grand into that 318 you got. Roller Rockers, performance ignition coil and capacitor, fastman throttle body, fresh tune up with indexed plugs of coarse, and full synthetic lubes all around with some lucas in it. That little 318 will scream...

I wouldn't know from experience, but if you dropped that much into a 360, and tuned it (SCT or Superchips, for example), it should do a lot more than a 318.

Not dissing the 318 (this has been discussed many times before), but from someone who's drove a Dakota with the 318 and now a Ram with the 360, even before my Superchips 3815, I'd pick the 360 in the Ram any day. Feels more powerful, better get up and go.

Just my two cents.
