Default New Dodge- Tapping- Help!

I just got a new 2000 DOdge ram sport 5.9l. The truck is freaking immaculately clean inside and out. Its got 100k even on it and it runs smooth. But when i really get on it, and hit about 4000 rpm, it starts to tap. Any ideas about what that is and how to fix it? This is my first dodge i've ever owned or worked on. Also what is this death flash everyone talks about? and how do i fix that? THanks.

Welcome to the forum. I would do an oil change a substitute a quart of oil for a quart of lucas oil stabilizer.

The death flash is a running topic right now, about three threads running this week. Check around for them.

Briefly the death flash is how the Chrysler fixed the pining and leaking plenum by retard the timing between something like 2-10 degrees instead of fixing the plenum the right way.

The only way I know of from here is to get a programmer chip like superchip, SCT, hypertech. There are lots of opinions on here about which works best based on your trucks setup

The "tap" that you hear, can be a number of things. More than likely, its a blown plenum gasket. (Answers for repair can be found with a search.)

I didn't know the plenum could cause a tapping noise.

I assumed (And I know, assumptions make an *** out of you and me.) that by "tap" he meant "ping", and a blown plenum almost always causes a ping in that range of RPM.

I can agree about the ping for sure. I just replaced my plenum with the hughes kit so I'm happy.

Default Ping

I did mean pinging in the upper rpm range. And i found a few of the threads on here about the death flash thanks for the heads up. If you fix the leaking plenum do you still need to replace the chip? or vice versa should you fix it before replacing chip anyway? Where can i find a place to purchase the hughes kit for the plenum replacement, would a local auto store be able to hook me up with that? Thanks guys for all your help.

Well the plenum will fix many problems like oil consumption and pinging under load, but it won't fix the death flash.

I haven't corrected my death flash because I just fixed my plenum, but it's on my list to get. I haven't decided on the chip yet. It's either the Hypertech or SCT right now.

Here's the links for the exact kit I just bought. I went ahead and got the intake gasket and replacement bolts for my intake too since I was already in the spending process. I got it in about 3 days.

An auto parts store might be able to order a hughe's kit, but not 100% on that. Would have to call and make sure. I am positive though that they wont be able to match the price that hughes website has though.
