Default Tach in a non-tach dash

Has anybody tried to swap a tach dash from the wrecker into a non-tach dash. I have a 97 2500 5.9 magnum/auto. w/o a factory tach. I know I could add an aftermarket unit somewhere (maybe the A-pillar) but the factory unit sure looks nice.

I can't help you, but, don't get discouraged, it's the weekend, and is a very slow time for the forum.

And btw, I have no tach either, and would love one. But I would personally not deal with the stock dash. I would get an aftermarket and put it in the pillar or mount it some where else.

I'll bump this up with a question: Was a tach an option or something? I knew the 5 speed trucks typically didn't come with one, but I thought all the autos came with it...

Just the opposite, more manuals came with them. Of course sports and other model auto tranny's came with them too.

that question's has been posed a number of times, but like a lot of questions, never actually gets answered. i can tell you that its not too hard to swap out, and its probably worth a try, provided you buy the cluster cheap enough. the prndl is an insertable module, but you'd probably be best off to try and get a match on year, auto/man, gas/diesel, MPH/KM. i bought a cluster on ebay for $25.

also be aware that the mileage is stored in the cluster, and cannot be changed (in the electronic 98+ models).
if it worked - you could probably move your existing speedo/odometer into the tach cluster.

edit. an ebay search indicates that 94-97 are interchangable.

Thanks for the info guys, I know up to 97 is the mechanical odometer and that the auto and manual dashes were slightly different, especially with a tach since you move two guages outward to accomodate the tach. But I did not know that the PRND21 was an insertable module. I was wondering if the truck has one master harness and you just plug and play. My 98 saturn is like that, to upgrade stereo, cruise etc. you just need the hardware and plug in to the existing wiring harness at the appropriate connector. I do know that my 97 ram has a wire in the engine compartment labeled PTO which I am assuming can be used if you have the 241HD t-case.

The tach didn't come in most ST's until 2000, when they were made standard in all Rams. In trucks without the tach, there was a very large fuel gauge, at least in the '98-'01 models.

Well my 97 ram has one. I have installed an after market tach in all my trucks that didn't have one.
