Default Radio Issues

I have a 2001 Off Road 1500. When I start it up, sometimes the radio will not turn on. I noticed that when I pull the IOD fuse out for about 30 seconds and plug it back in, the radio will work for a few days. I am pulling the IOD located on the inside instrument panel side access. When I say it doesn’t work, I mean that when I start the truck, the radio display is black – no clock or station number and it won’t turn on with the power button. What’s going on and does anyone have a permanent fix for this? The radio is the standard CD + Tape with the steering wheel controls for volume and mode.

you might need a new head unit
though, if u go aftermarket, the steering wheel controls may not work

Mine was doing that and died today. I think it is on the circuit board internally. I am on the hunt for aftermarket radio as I write this. One of my buddies who works at the parts store was tellin me that all of his dodge vehicles with stock radios have done the same to him too and he just put aftermarket in his so I don't know the answer but I do know the fix.lol

You might make sure that your connections on the back of the head unit are firmly in place. The stock wiring harness is bad about loosening up over time. It could also be the circuit board espeacially if something has been spilled on the dash. Just a thought before you drop some dough on a new deck. I mean if you upgrade, you'll never look back.

Default More info...

I spent 15 months in Iraq so the truck sat for most of that time. When I returned, I changed the battery and then the truck started giving me some other issues. I would be driving and then the speedometer and tach would go to zero, then the fuel gage and then all the warning lights would come on and the radio would freeze on (could not change the station, volume or turn it off). It would stay on even if I turned off the truck and took the keys out. I unplugged and plugged all the fuses and circuit breakers that I could find and sprayed them with di-electric grease. The radio problem is the only issue I have left.

Thanks for your help,

Then I agree with the others, circuit board. www.crutchfield.com has some pretty good buys on components.

Default Circuit Board

By Circuit Board you mean - new radio head. Is there any aftermarket radios out there that are compatable with the steering wheel switches? Or is there a good supplier out there with stock replacement radios?

Thanks again for your help,

I don't have the steering wheel controls my self, but it is doable. There are some head units that will have an extra plug just for steering controls.

Default eBay...

There are lots of factory radios on eBay. Does anyone know if this will fit / work in a 2001 with steering wheel controls?
