the labor time will be alot...thats what sux about it. i took it to the auto shop to see how much they would charge to replace mine...it was going to be about a 1500 dollar job to put parts in that cost like 15 bucks. i just keep my fluid level checked :-) i can live with leaking seals for now lol

i use alldatadiy.com they say it will take 1.6 hours for one side and 3 hours to do both sides with a moderately skilled mechanic on a dana 44 front.

I'd add 3 or 4 hours atleast to that estimate. Just cleaning everything properly will take an hour. Plus you do realize you need a special tool for the passenger side seal.

yes i do realize that you need that tool for the seal, its nothing special a person could make one with some washers, threaded stock, and some nuts.....or you could rent it from advanced. 4 hours sounds about right for a one man job

I was talking to the OP about the special tool. And as far as the time goes, it will take 4 hours for a novice just to get the hub nut and hub off if it's never been removed. Not to mention it wouldn't be anywhere close to $1500 , or even a $1000 if it was only a 4 hour job.

I did mine and yes the "special" tool was fabbed with threaded rod and such. Unfortunately I do not recall the time exactly but I think it was a long day for the seals, U & L B-jts, u-jts and all the steering components right up to the pitman. One thing I do remember is that the pass. seal in the CAD was cocked to one side (which is why I decided to DIY) I'm thinkin from a careless previous axle install. So be carefull when you slide the pass side axle through the seal.

BTW I paid $380.00 for the seal replacement 10 months before I did it 4 yrs ago. Oh and Zman is absolutely correct on the hub nut. If you don't have oxy-act. you can try map gas and a 3/4" drive (1" is better) breaker bar with an 8' pipe!!! Forget the impact, You hangin on the end of that pipe should get you close to 1600 ft-lbs.

I didn't want to say it, but your axle seal being cocked is exactly why you don't want to TRY and make the tool yourself, unless you want to take it apart again. And besides making the tool if you don't already have one only adds to the time. That seal needs to be seated right, or don't put the tools away.
