just a reminber over a 2.5-3 range and higher(in the front) you may have alignment problem, if so you will need to buy a differnt upper control arm...

I have a 2004 1500 2wd. Do I have to level it before getting a lift kit? I just want to lift it 6" or less and i really dont know what i would have to use to lift it.

I have an 01 and this is the kit I ordered http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/94-01...#ht_3773wt_964 It was pretty cheap(do a best offer), easy to install, and retained a pretty good ride.I didnt use the rear blocks though. Im able to swing a 33x12.50x15 with minimal rubbing. If you want more than the 3" I'd suggest a spindle lift, but depending on your backspacing I think you may need 17" rims.

I think 3" is the maximum for the stock control arms/ball joints.... beyond that, and you try and move them past their limits. (and things break..... not a good scene with steering parts.....)

Not sure on the 2by's, but, on the 4x4s, stock shocks will tolerate 3" as well.

Spindles: Only if you want more lift than can be had with just springs.
