vaccuum leak
so i have a large and small vacuum leak in the evap system. ive replaced the tank cap, checked for hose cracks from the engine to the tank. i replaced a short hose the was cracked pretty bad and cleared the codes. now theyre back!!!! any help?? im about to break down and take it to a shop. any $$ saving tips or ideas??!!!
use a little propane tank and nozzle. turn the truck on and let it idle. turn the propane on and spray it at vacuum hoses, canisters, intake gaskets, etc. if there is a leak, the rpms will rise as the propane gets sucked in.
ok. so i broke down yesterday and went and had a smoke machine hooked up for $45. i am now %100 percent positive there are no external leaks in the system. my truck has in the past tripped a large leak detected dtc and a small leak detected dtc. i have cleared them countless times after trying something different, and yesterday, when i took it to pepboys, there was only 1 dtc tripped, and that was for small leak detected. even with the machine hooked up, the system held pressure. i cleared the code again. im a little over 50 miles since i cleared that code and it hasnt come on yet, but im sure it will since it has every other time in the past. so what is next? sounds like a sticky solenoid to me? what else could be possible?
ok changed the evap purge solenoid. 130 miles later, check engine light again. p0455 large leak detected. whats next? im completely baffled and annoyed. im taking that $45 solenoid back tommorrow.
Replace all the hoses no matter what, cheap enough to try. And there are hoses up on top of the tank you may not have seen.

OK!,lol I would say since you don't want to change the hoses that you have not already changed, then I guess your only route would be to replace the canister itself. They can go bad, and I'm not talking about the plastic housing being cracked. btw. IIRC there is a check valve on top of it.
