v10 question
Well, I have said this before, and I will say it again. Sometimes when I type on this forum, I can come across as one of the most negative ******** you have ever met.
I didn't mean to bash him, or insinuate that it is an impossible swap. Just want to merely get across that this was not going to be neither easy or cheap.

I don't think that it was taken that way. I think it was just the overabundance of negativity by several posters that gave a "you can't do it" vibe to the thread. I have come to see the various views of the members on here. I am just a gearhead at heart and my view is that if you set your mind to it you can do anything.

Everything about my responses was consistent with those questions. Yes, it will be a major undertaking. No, it will not be cheap or easy. The OP then comes back after and tells us all about his skills, his uncle, his desire to make this a project where time is not critical and a half a dozen other things that should have been mentioned in the first post. I too never said it couldn't be done. I thought I was being helpful by pointing out some of the pitfalls to this idea. When someone says they have a limited budget I think it's a lot more helpful to give them a better idea of what they may be facing rather than just say, "Go for it, bud!"
Anyone that thinks this can be done with $500 and some time with a mig welder has no idea what's involved. I'm a technical writer mostly in the motorcycle field, but I spent 7 years working as a magazine editor for Petersen Publishing and have been published in both Hot Rod and 4Wheel and Offroad, to name a few. I'm no expert, but I have a better than average understanding of what's involved. I may be new to my Dodge RAM 2500, but I am not new to trucks, 4X4s, or performance cars and mods.
Bottom line: the guy asked for opinions. If all he wanted to hear was from people who supported the idea, then he should have said so. I wish him luck and I hope that if he goes forward he will chronicle the swap with pics and share them with us. It should be very interesting to follow along with. But considering what he first asked, my responses were entirely appropriate.
My uncle said to see how the frame is and if he doesnt want too much just put my cab on it. The cab thats on it could go to scrap since the only thing that is good is the bed. Decisions decisions. I like that idea since making cab mounts is easier than motor/tranny mounts.
I didnt take any of the posts as negative they are your opinions after all and you guys told me what I would need and some told me what would be easier and I appreciated all of them. I know its not going to be a simple weekend project this is basicly something for me to do what im not doing anything else. Im still not set on if I want the v10 or 360 a lot of factors are going threw my head both have pros and cons. Ill keep you guys updated.
I love my V10, but I don't know if I'd invest the time, money and effort involved for an engine that was discontinued in 2003 that is already getting hard to find parts for and has few hop-up options. The 360 has been around forever, is cheap, plentiful and well supported by the aftermarket and would be a much easier job.
That said, if you do go ahead with the V10, take lots of pictures and keep us updated. I would love to see how it goes together for you.

Thats one thing im worried about I heard that they dont have a good supply of aftermarket things(with a v10 do you really need it?) and I read that some have had trouble with the heads. Im kinda swinging the v10 way only cause how many 93 and older rams have you saw with a v10. I never have and I think it would be cool to have one. Like I said its a project truck for me I needed something since my dad and I finished up our 78 cj5 which took 4 years it was just something to mess around with I dont care If it takes me a year to put the engine in as long as im making progress.
It would be a rare bird, no doubt about that.
The head issue was nowhere near as bad as the internet makes it out, and it was pretty much cleared up by the '99 model year. There isn't too much hop-up stuff available and some repair parts are getting down to junkyard stock only. That concerns me and is why I will be leaving mine stock. It makes more than enough power for what I use it for. If I had the time and money and a cheap V10 at my disposal, I'd probably want to do it too. Good luck, whichever way you go.
