Default Trans Fluid and Front Gear Ratio ?

My friend is going to get a front locker for his truck but isn't sure of the gearing. He has an 01 1500 5.9 4x4.

Next..

What trans fluid should I use for my trans and how much do I need to put in? I was out playing today and ended up going though some stuff that didn't look that bad but really was.

The best way to know what gear ratio your friend's truck has would be to go to a dealership and have a build sheet printed out.
Options were: 3.21:1, 3.55:1, 3.92:1, and 4.10:1 (only in the off road edition)

As for the transmission fluid you need to use ATF+4 and only that.

I wanna say its like 6 quarts or something close to that. It should be listed in your service manual on the back side of the book.

No, its in the front of the service manual!

Do you have an external filter, or cooler? I would say to get 6 to be sure. Also, put a drain plug in.

I don't have a clue if I have an external cooler or filter. Wasn't there a DYI somewhere here for changing trans fluid and installing a drain plug? As for the trans fluid sounds like I'll need to get 7, 6 for filling it back up then 1 for flushing.

Amsoil transmission fluid, from what I've heard, would be OK as well.

But nothing else, either ATF+4 or Amsoil.

Jack up the rear end of the truck and put it in neutral.

Put a mark on the bottom of one rear tire and on the bottom of the rear drive shaft. count how many times the drive shaft spins around as opposed to 1 revolution of the tire.

If it went 3.5 times around you have 3.55 gears
just under 4 times 3.92 gears
just past 4 times 4.10 gears
etc, etc.
