Well, in my friends various Fords, they have indicator lights. Sometimes even though you put them in 4lo they don't go. But, these are the electronic switches, not the floor shifter.

Wow ok guys thanks.

Run through...

1. Put truck in neutral
2. Turn truck off
3. Apply brake and shift into four hi and then go to 4 lo

To get out...
1. Apply brake and go through 4 hi and then out
2. then normal>?

Or get it to nuetral, shut truck off and then get to 4 hi again, then turn truck on and go normal?

Correct/?

No need to go into 4HI first. You can stop the truck and shut it off, but you can also leave it running and do it at a slow roll. I can go into 4LO at a slow roll straight from 2HI with no grinding whatsoever. Get going about 2MPH (or idle speed in 2HI), then shift the column shifter (tranny) to N, then shove that floor shifter forward nice and quick, then come back down into D with the column shifter. If you want to be safe, shut the truck off. Never hurts.

Also, there's no 4LO light because the transfer case is manual, not electronic. Also, the light indicator is connected to the CAD unit on the front axle, not the transfer case. That CAD unit doesn't care whether you are in 4LO or 4HI. It does the same action in both cases.

I don't know what the manufacturers reccomendation is but to get in 4 low I just put the truck in neutral and shift to 4 low then shift into drive or reverse whichever gear is necessary.
to get out of 4 low I shift back to neutral and shift transfer case back to 4 high or 2 high and shift trans back to required gear. No grinding at all.

That's what I do. I leave the truck running, pause with the t case in N even, no problem.

im still trying to figure out why these trucks sometimes grind when going from 4 lo, mine occasionally does
but 4 lo is super handy on the farm, specially moving wagons and things that have been sitting for a while, usually don't even have to touch the throttle :P

No, but if you find yourself at 5,000 rpms in overdrive going 25 mph that's a dead giveaway

Now that explains using 5 gallons to the mile. JK.

the user manual says to roll 2-3 mph and put it in neutral then shift into 4lo. i tried it like the manual says one time, heard the gear clash and ever since then if i need 4lo i stop, put it in neutral, shut it off, shift into 4lo, start it and go.
these trucks feel like they're going to rip the wheels off in 4lo, which is awesome, but you're not supposed to go more than 20mph in 4lo unless you want to blow your motor.
