The trick is to throw the t-case lever from 2HI (or 4HI) into 4LO in one continuous motion. Do it nice and quick. Don't pause in N on the t-case. Even with the tranny in Nuetral, the clutches still produce enough drag through the tranny to spin the output shaft of the tranny up pretty quickly when the t-case is in N. That's why you shift at a slow roll, and why you do NOT stop in N on the t-case. That's where the grinding is coming from.

So, the options are, shift quickly at a slow roll, or stop, shut the motor off and then shift.

yeah, 2lo would be insane. but if you did a burnout it would take all of 2 seconds to over rev your engine and send pistons flying everywhere i would think.

ive always wonderd why 4lo is so beasty, i mean when i ingage 4lo and just wants to pull a train. Hell i pulled a dully out of the sand at the lake with a boat behind him in 4lo WITH NO PROBLEM!!!! ah man that was funny, dumbass ford drivers, god they crack me up. Ok so this FORD dully backing up his boat into the lake, not a boat ramp just soft sand and not 4wd, first he backs the boat to far and hang the trailer up on the sand cause the boat was so heavy it slowly start sinking in the sand. ok ok then the dumbass starts to gun it. WOW WHAT AN IDOT. ok then he barys his real axle. OMG IT WAS GREAT. ok then mr BIG CHEVY comes along, 1500 4wd 10"lift. PFFF...yea right. all hes doing his bouncing his truck around. so after 15 mins of that, i go over and im like you want me to try. The looks at me like yea ****ing right. Ok so another 10 mins go buy. Nothing. IM standing there laughing my a*s off. Ok so finally i try. Oh man here it goes, after the 2nd try. BAM HES OUT. God i love dodges!! Well my new tires had a part in it too...

It really doesn't matter what brand of truck you drive. If you're a dumbass, then God is going to punish you for it

i agree with that one. me and a friend driving a gmc were playing in some black, sticky mud and we both were trying to get all the way across a handful of different mud holes and we were pretty much just taking turns pulling eachother out. the funny thing about that day though is that i have open diffs and he had positraction and i still made it further than him.
of course its good to plan on getting stuck and have someone there that can pull you out.

we buried my dad's super duty up to the rear axle in sand in a field of ours, hooked my truck to it, ALMOST pulled it out, but started spinning, and i did not want to bury it up to the axles in blowsand, but we also had about 7000 lbs behind it, used a tractor, then hooked my truck to the wagon to move it
