plenum gasket?????
i was told to replace the plenum gasket, i was told that they get old and cause oil to burn and all kinds of factors.
i would like to know where this is on the truck, how it works, and whats the point in replacing it, and how to install it?
thank you

The plenum gasket is between the intake manifold and the plenum plate on the underside of intake manifold. To replace it you must remove the intake manifold, unbolt the plenum plate, replace plenum gasket, then reassemble. There is a Do It Yourself thread about it with pictures in the DIY section of this forum, and if you search around the internet, you will find a couple other DIYs.
The reason the plenum gasket goes out is because the intake manifold and the plate are made of two different metals so they expand and contract at different rates, thereby tearing the gasket. The bolts holding on the plate are also a little too long, so they bottom out before they're torqued to spec. In order to reduce the chances of the gasket blowing again, you'll want to get an aftermarket kit which includes a new plenum plate, gasket, and bolts. I have a Hughes kit in my truck, and I have no complaints so far.

The hughes kit is very good. I replace my original after 60,000 miles and the hughes kit has lasted over 150,000. Go to www.hughesengines.com and buy the plenum kit and the intake manifold gasket and bolt kit. Change your thermostat and the little short water hose between the water pump and the intake while your taking all the trouble to take off all the stuff needed to pull off the intake.

I know, it's crazy. Before and after I bought my truck I spent at least two weeks searching and researching before I posted my first ever question. It's amazing what someone can do with a bit of effort.
so go ahead an replace the thermasate and water hose to just be cause this would be the easiest time to do so?

It's kind of a pain, but it's not exactly hard in my perspective to replace the plenum gasket. It's just a cramped area to work in, lots of little bits and pieces that get in the way, and kind of dirty. Like the other's have noted, get the Hughes Plenum plate, or buy a new manifold that doesn't have one....
