Default Rear Main seal (solved) now leaking coolant *ASAP*

Hey guys, its been awhile, but the time has finally come to do a bunch of work.

Long story short, I thought it would be a good idea to buy the new rear main from Mopar.
Low and behold i get it and there are no paint marks telling me which way it goes.

I "think" that the //////// marks go torwards the inside as this would be the sealing surface correct?

One more thing. The water pump that I am taking off, the pully is bolted onto the WP with 4 bolts, easy. The water pump I am putting on (from mopar, correct for my application) has a pressed on pully. How do I go about holding the sucker so i can tq. the fan clutch down?

Any help would be great guys. Thanks

IIRC, (and it's been years since I did this) the ribbed marks are supposed to "grip" the Crank so yes, they should go in.

There's a pic Here at the very bottom, you might try to save it and zoom in with MS Paint to see if you can see the correct orientation.

The press on water pumps will require a strap wrench to hold the pulley still.

i made my own strap wrench for that same thing the other day. i took a strip of rubber and wrapped it around the pulley, one of those flat black bungee's or an old belt off another car so long as its rubber so it can get some traction should work. then i grabbed a ratchet strap and used the end without the ratchet and hooked it on one side of the frame (passenger to tighted the fan, driver to loosen) then i put the end of the strap around the rubber strip and wrapped it so when i put some tension on it, it just got tighter and held the pully quite nicely. i went over the top of the pully and tucked the end of the strap once and that was enough to hold it.

the way i see it, why go buy a tool to get the job done when you can use what you already have so long as it'll give you the same results.

ok, after 12 hours, lots of swearing, some pizza and adult beverages, everything UNDER the truck is done, all thats left is to put the accessory bracket on, hoses, themostat, and fan.

i hope to god i did everything right, the rear main didnt get "shaved" when installing, i put plenty of RTV on the oil pan gasket where it called for it. i put a thin layer of RTV on the timing cover gasket and WP gasket, timing was set correctly.

im crossing my fingers, i hope its all good =D

What notches is the PavementSucks thread in the oil pan area talking about? It's my understanding that no RTV is necessary for the oil pan gasket as it is metal reinforced.

I think it needs it at the corners, similar to an intake gasket.

As noted by the arrows on the last picture? If so, then maybe that's why I have a persistent oil leak since I didn't use any when I buttoned up my engine.

If you are talking about the intake , then yes. I don't think you did the oil pan yet right?

No, I'm talking about RTV at the oil pan. I never used any as I don't believe the Magnum rebuild book called for any.

Maybe I meant the rear main seal. You did that work? If you didn't then than that's probably what's leaking. Either way , you have to take it apart so you might as well use the rtv.
