cold air intake info and pictures
yes any of these or the 14x3 are better than stock
rumble- if it were me, i would prob pick the 3rd one that i listed and use all that tra cash for sumthin else.....i really dont think the heat shield will make much of a difference and the filter is further from the main heat than the 14x3

The idea of a CAI is not to get cold air to the engine, just cooler air than what the stock airbox provides and more of it. In the case of my V10, the stock snorkel goes to a box mounted right behind the rad, A/C condenser coil and tranny cooler. And its opening is about 5X3" and points backwards towards the firewall. great for evaporative emissions, terrible for performance. The K&N CAI puts the intake opening on the opposite side where the incoming air only has to go through the rad because the condenser and tranny cooler do not extend that far and the open element gets a bit of a ramair effect at speed. The metal enclosure keeps much of the engine heat out, but mainly it allows the cooler air coming through the grille to surround the filter element. Coming back from the track yesterday (180 miles round trip, almost entirely freeway) I actually hit 13mpg, a first in my V10. Once I got off the freeway it backed down into the 10-11 range, but I had never gotten above 11 before I installed the K&N kit.
Here's a look at the rad. You can see that on the passenger side there is much less restriction to the incoming airstream.

Here's the filter end of the CAI. Much more area than stock and a better place to draw intake air from.

i have felt the top of my round intake setup right after driving the truck for a while, its pretty warm but not real hot, but the major benefit of a round air cleaner, is the large surface area air can enter the motor
miami i get where your coming from but "dang" K&N are just a little bit out of my price range i guess what im getting at is that if pretty much all look the same y not get the cheaper one
95 maroon i can also see the good in the round filter to because its larger surface area of the filter,
did anyone look at that spectre kit?

Like I said, if not for the side-draft design of my TB and the illegality of it, I would be running a round air cleaner, too. It would have been a heck of a lot cheaper than the $278 I paid for the K&N CAI. I just wanted to give you a better idea of what a well-designed CAI does, but I doubt the performance is any better than a 14X3.
Yours is cold air. Mines the same way, just a different brand. Your still allowing colder than engine air to circulate around the filter. You could get even better cooling by cutting a hole in the front of the air box, and running a hose from that hole to right beside the radiator. That's what i did. Just allows cooler air to enter rather than striving to pull air from the fender
