Default Alarm on truck going off, how do I disable it.

Hi
I had locked my truck the other day.
When I went to open it the alarm went off,
I just bought the truck and it only came with one key.
I never activated the alarm, don't even know how.
I disconnected the horns so it is loud and annoying.
but now the truck won't run.
How do i Turn off the alarm or disable it.
Its a 98 1500 w/ a 59 in it.
I haven't had the time to look at it yet,
Thanks for your help in advance

Do you have a valet button under your dash? I have one of those, and if the security system is enabled, it wont start unless you hold the button.

You should have a button under the dash usually around the em brake release in most cases it looks like a top hat usually with a black and red wire coming from it. when you first open the door I think you have like 5 seconds to push teh button to stop the alarm from sounding. I'm assuming this is an aftermarket alarm? find the maker and most of the time you can find a remote on Ebay and the maker usually has ops manuals online. don't cut any of the wires though it will activate you kill switch. disconnect the neg cable most of the time the alarm will stop sounding to allow you time to find the wire it's actually called the Valet switch. Good luck

edit: oops didn't see the previous post (posted at the same time )

If it's blowing the horn it is likely you have the Dodge factory alarm system with keyless entry. Since it is passively armed there is no valet switch. How come the seller didn't give you the remote? Have you tried contacting him? You can pull the alarm relay, but it has a starter interlock that once activated can only be bypassed by proper disarming of the system. There may be a workaround for service so I'd try calling a dealer.

I stand corrected, the factory alarm system can be passively activated. here's wht my manual says about this system:

ARMING
Passive arming of the VTSS occurs when the vehicle
is exited with the key removed from the ignition
switch, the headlamps are turned off, and the doors
are locked while they are open using the power lock
switch, or locked after they are closed by turning
either front door lock cylinder to the lock position
using the key. The power lock switch will not function
if the key is in the ignition switch or the head-
lamps are turned on with the driver side front door
open. The VTSS will not arm if the doors are locked
using the mechanical lock button. Active arming of
the VTSS occurs when the “Lock” button on the
Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter is
depressed to lock the vehicle. For active arming to
occur, the doors must be closed and the ignition
switch must be in the Off position when the RKE
transmitter “Lock” button is depressed. However,
once the VTSS arming process has been completed,
the ignition switch can be turned to the Accessory
position without triggering the alarm.
Once the VTSS begins passive or active arming,
the security indicator lamp in the overhead console
will flash rapidly for about fifteen seconds. This indicates
that the VTSS arming is in progress. Turning a
key in the ignition switch, opening a door, or unlocking
a door by any means during the fifteen second
arming process will cause the VTSS indicator to stop
flashing and the arming process to abort. Once the
fifteen second arming function is successfully completed,
the indicator will flash at a slower rate, indicating
that the VTSS is armed.
DISARMING
Passive disarming of the VTSS occurs when the
vehicle is unlocked using the key to unlock either
front door. Active disarming of the VTSS occurs when
the vehicle is unlocked by depressing the “Unlock”
button of the RKE transmitter. Once the alarm has
been activated (horn pulsing, headlamps flashing,
and the engine no-run feature), either disarming
method will also deactivate the alarm. Depressing
the “Panic” button on the RKE transmitter will not
disarm the VTSS.

If this is your system then something has malfunctioned because it should have disarmed when you unlocked it with the key even if it had been triggered.

Thanks for the replies,
didn't find a valet switch, but i somehow shut it off.
the after market radio has an alarm built into it and I believe that it controls the alarm now. The alarm went off during heavy rains so there is probably a short in the wiring that grounds out when it rains.
I bought the car from a fly by night used car sales man who got the truck at auction,
so I won't be able to get another key from him.
And again thanks for the replies

If it is the factory system you can get a new remote off eBay for about $25. Might have to get the dealer to reprogram it, though.

03 is a third gen, which is where you need to be.

Try unlocking the drivers door twice with the key.
