Deep gears (4.10s and beyond for example) give you the "hole shot" or quicker accel but have a lower top speed. Taller gears (2.73s for example) give you higher top speed with slower accel. I am sure many on here have their own gear ratio they like for their application. Just gear it for what you will be using the truck for most to get the best results. You might have to adjust your speedo also.

I would guess the factory gears give you a decent low and top end mix.

Your ring and pinion gears determine how many times your drive shaft will spin per revolution of your tires. With 4.10 gears your driveshaft is spinning 4.1 times each time your tires does a complete revolution. With 3.55 gears it's spinning 3.55 times.

So for bigger tires you want lower gears, like 4.56 or 4.88

what axles do the off-road editions come with? i know if you have a chrysler 9.25 axle...you'd have to get a different carrier for anything higher than 4.10

1994-2001 Rams used a solid front axle. its a Dana 44 CAD. (Center AxleDisconnect) The rear is a P.O.S. chrysler corporate 9.25" If i recall correctly i dont know if that goes for the off road though too

yea...if thats the case, you've got the lowest gears you can get with that axle...anything lower and you'll need a bigger axle

You just need a bigger carrier. Or "thick" gears.
