hi, i have a dodge ram 1999, 100,000 miles. the problem is in the right front wheel. driving normal it makes a clicking or a clip clop sound.
when i turn left it stops. if i put it in 4x4 the sound stops, but when i turn left it makes a grinding noise. any help would be nice.

 

I had clicking noise on my front right wheel. I replaced the axle Ujoint and viola - silence.

 

It's a universal going out. My cousin's did it and mine just started doing it.

 

thanks for the advice. it is my ujoint. i have the wheel, caliper, rotor and locknut off. unscrewed the bolts in back of the hub but i cannot get the hub apart. i was searching the internet and saw a hub puller. do these work, are they universal? hammering just isnt doing it.

I haven't done one myself yet, but I think there is a nut inside the hub. Others will chime in with more knowledge

 

Change them before you need new axle spindles.

 

i was reading on a antique tractor forum that the best penetrating fluid you can get is a 50/50 mix of atf and acetone. mix up a little bit of that and pour it on the seam between the hub and spindle then tap on it with the hammer to work it in. repeat another time or two then start beating on it to break it loose. one common suggestion is to back the bolts off the hub (the 3 that hold it on) a little bit (maybe 1/2 inch) and hit them to break it free. and i believe with the passenger side you have to take the diff cover off and remove a c clip to pull the axle out.

 

DO NOT USE A PULLER! You will wreck the bearing and will need to buy a new one. Get three bolts with same thread , so you don't wreck the original one's. And do what Sheriff said.

Another thing you can try , is also by loosening them the 1/2 inch and hold a piece of steel between the bolt head and the knuckle, then turn the steering wheel. Repeat for all 3 bolts a little at a time. 2 people helps with this procedure.

 

zman, i saw where vwanddodge suggested the steel and wheel turning maneuver but wouldn't you run the risk of messing up your ps pump?

when i did mine i forgot that the hub slides off the yoke and i pulled the hub and axle out together and when i got them out the hub decided to slide off in my hand. that was a homer moment for me i didn't drop it though.

 

It won't hurt the PS pump, it's only momentary pressure you are putting on the bolts. Besides that, it doesn't really need to be running. I would however have both sides off the ground.
