Default 1995 Ram 1500 5.9L Compatible with this 1996 Transmission?

My 1995 Dodge Ram 1500 with 218K miles finally failed me, it has begun to slip and not shift properly all the time. I pulled the transmission out this weekend to replace it with a known good transmission (the image in front is my old transmission and the rear is the intended replacement). I noticed that the topside connections were different; the original is a 3-pin and the replacement is an 8-pin. Do I have any other options other than rebuilding mine or purchasing another tranny? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

I originally thought the 1996 had a RE as well, however, other links I've seen report the RE wasn't used until 1998.

Either way, though, going from one model year tranny to another is going to involve a custom wiring job, as most harnesses are different (even from different model years of the 46RE).

96-02 = 46RE

88?-95=46RH

You can not put a 46RE in the place of a 46RH.
