Default 5.9 light duty versus 5.9 heavy duty

Well went to dealer today looking for the air intake duct and the parts guy asked me if I had the heavy duty 5.9(gas) or the light duty 5.9(gas).. I told him all I knew was that it was a 2001 dodge ram 1500 with a 5.9L.. anyone ever hear of two versions of the 5.9L..If so how can I tell which one I have???? thanks in advance

seems like a stupid question from a dealer who should be able to look up the vin and tell you everything about it. i'd guess that he intended to ask if you have a 5.9 ctd diesel or 5.9 1500 gas. those air intakes would be different. a v10 would be also likely be different. otherwise i'd think the 5.9/5.2 gas would be the same.

there is a difference between the light duty 360 and a heavy duty 360. the light duty is like the 318 exhaust where as the heavy duty is more like v10 exhaust wise meaning it is true dual and two cats side by side then into a huge muffler and a single outlet. im not sure but i think it also has an air injection system too but im not sure. but u mostly likely have the light duty 360 because the heavy duty 360s were in the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks. but intake wise between the too is the same i believe if im wrong someone plz tell me so i know for future postings!

HD 5.9's are in the 3/4 ton trucks, the 2500 series. Typically they come with a 47re tranny, D60 axles and a studier frame. Might also have a bigger radiator. The engine itself shouldn't be any different.

Default thank you

Well there is a difference in the air intake.. it showed two part # for the 5.9L gas in the 1500 model... I didn't have the truck or the vin and didn't want to order the wrong one... I will go back with the Vin

The 8th digit in your vin number is your engine code

Z - is the light duty 5.9 V-8
5 - is the heavy duty 5.9 V-8
C - is the Cummins 5.9 inline 6

There isn't a bit of difference between the two.
Go to Oreily's and get shock when you look at part numbers for the front disk brakes. The pad numbers state that they are commonly used on Chevy 1/2 tons.
