wheelin with bad tranny
Look, Blue, your gonna do what you want, but I DO suggest you do two things. 1. write down a few wrecker services' numbers. 2. Attach a strap to your truck and drape it over the tail gate before you even start. That way the wrecker guy wont have to wade mud to pull you out.
your just going to made it worst. think about it. its harder on your truck when your trying to push through mud and go up steep hills. dont get stuck and then have to spend a **** load of money geting your truck pulled out. just face it and get a rebuild and upgrade your inernals when you can afford it. plus the longer you wait the more damafe you can do to hard parts.
ok let me just put a two cent chip in here...
to engage 4x4 on dry pavement wont really hurt anything untill you try to turn, thats when all the strain happens on pavement. there is no straign in a striaght line because the front and rear axles have the same gears... unless you run two differant size tires...
as for the 10mph, thats for 4LO, 4Hi, you can go up to about 50, the book says 55, but i wouldnt...
as for going for it... in the mud i mean, i dont mean to step on toes here, it sounds like alot of the people on here are drivers, they know there truck, they know how they work, but hardly ever take them in the mud... although a few of us do it religiously... do the strap thing. bring a buddy and like the other guys said, have a plan for failure... but just know, the gears will go. so just get it rebuilt first. your better off...
as for wheeling with a bad trans, i wheeled mine for about a month with no reverse. i was stupid, and should have never done that... so dont do that...

if you already have a new transmission lined up then it'd be fine as long as you have someone there that has a strong enough truck to pull yours out without your truck spinning the tires to assist in your buddies efforts. if you plan on a rebuild and do it then you'll just be adding to the broken parts list if it does go out on you.
like jasonw said, the computer only controls overdrive and you don't get into overdrive at low speeds.
the book says no more than 20mph in 4lo and no more than 55 in 4hi. it also says never to engage 4wd on pavement because the tires need to be able to slip when turning the wheel and they don't have an easy time slipping on pavement.

i wheel my truck religiously, i am in 4hi, just as much as in 2hi... so just FYI, i dont care what the book says, the only time the drivetrain has a harder then usual time turning is when you are turning a corner, which at that point the truck will "buck" which will then put tons on pressure on everything from axles, all the way to the steering wheel where it will jerk out of your hands voilantly depending on how hard of a turn you are doing...
like i said to kinda go with what sheriff said, the tires need room to spin while turning the wheel.. if you go in a straight line, your fine... i do it all the time... need to keep the truck in 4lo until i get out of the trail onto dry pavement.... its fine, as long as ya dont do it alot...
