Default Diff Backlash

I recently changed bearings in the rearend and im hearin noise. I'm pretty sure i didnt get the diff bearing preload set correct. I have a manual and it tells me what to do only thing im kinda a lil sketchy on is measuring the backlash. What tool do i need to measure this? i have a 2001 Dodge Ram 5.2L 4x4 3.55 ratio with the Trac-lok diff.

Did you add the friction modifier in with the fluid?

you need a dial indicator to measure backlash, without it you have no idea what it is. there is no set amount of turns for the adjusters, every unit is going to be different.

+1 and I'll add that if you're hearing noise it might be too late for the set of gears that you have.

+2 on dial indicator.

Check this link for bolt torque and backlash settings.

How far did you drive it while it was making that noise?

you will hear a whine if the gears are too tight or too loose, there is a happy spot in the middle that should produce little to no whine like we are used to hearing.... or not hearing, lol
