Driver side axle seal. If I remember correctly then I'll have to pop out the passenger seal to get the intermediate shaft out of the carrier all the way so maybe both axle seals.
I smelled gear oil when I got out of the truck yesterday and I knew what it was as soon as I smelled it.

The intermediate shaft will come out without removing the seal. But, like you said, might as well replace it too.

You might want to fix the grinding gearbox in that old garden tractor while you're at it.

The gearbox don't grind when the engine don't run.
I wish that thing still ran, it could outrun my dads new Husqvarna if it did.

I added about 10hp one day because I had nothing better to do

True!

They're pretty good little machines if you rework the gearbox so they stop eating input shafts. Then you can do wheelies in fifth gear without worrying that it's going to be another $200 input shaft next week.

it wasn't all that long ago that you replaced both, correct? 2009.
do you recall what brand seals you used? it wasn't those sorryass timkens was it.

if so, try National from Advance or SKF from Napa.
are you going to pop the diff out with the comealong again? that was a great idea... I used it too.

Yeah, it hasn't been long. It wouldn't surprise me if the u-joint was bad on that axle shaft, that would explain the leaky seal.
I think they were National, that's the red and black box right? The only time I have used Timken was in the transfer case.
I think I'm just going to pry it this time, I don't have a second set of hands to work the come along.

i attached the come-along to the tow hook. then threaded a small nylon lifting sling around the back side of the diff and attached it the come-along. with carrier bearing caps marked and removed - i put my feet up on the diff to keep it from falling out, and jacked the come-along tight. then one smidgen tighter and it popped loose. at that tight point, if you wanted to, you could likely nudge it with a pry bar to pop it loose.

without the come-along i pryed and pryed every which way from sunday with no success.
