Default Fuel Gage Problem

Need some ideas as where to start. I have two fuel tanks with a switch to connect the dash gage to tank being used. Aux tank gage works correctly. The main, truck tank, the gage goes to passed empty position and low fuel light comes on. Truck is a 1996 2500 with Cummins, 4x4, long bed.

Where should I start to trouble shoot this problem?

Thanks in advance.

Does the fuel tack stay in the same position if the tank is full or like a 1/4 tank? if it stays in one position ur float could be stuck, if it goes up to full when u fill it and when u get to a certain point and it stops working float could be stuck there also.

Thumpper369 -- thanks for reply. Fuel level has no affect, gage goes to zero point and stays there.

+1, the sending unit/float may be bad.

On my Dakota, I had the gauge go all bonkers, bouncing around all over. A small town mechanic I knew replaced it for around $250 (thats parts and labor) and I was all set. Whatever you do, if you don't do the work yourself, do not take it to a stealership. They wanted $300 just for the part.

I think 2500 Quad cabs + short bed had the 34. Anything 1500/2500/3500 regular cab + long box had a 35 gallon tank, IIRC.

Anything 1500 short bed had the 26 gallon.

Truck tank is 35 and my aux is 45 thus near total 80gals set up with in cab selector and full return system to each tank. Aux tank is an American tank, Perry FL, with tool box on top. Always wished I had gotten a 65 aux tank as always just a little short of the - then - cheap states.

Will losing of a ground at tank sensor cause reading to go to a zero reading? What voltage and resitance would one expect? I'm going to dig out the wire diagrams and see what I can find.
