Default Sorry...Another air cleaner question

Not to beat a dead horse...but I have a question about the 14x3 air cleaner. From searching it seems some guys get the air cleaners with a drop base and others get the flat base. I understand the whole 1/2" air cleaner spacer thing, but I'm a bit unclear of whether I should be looking for ones with a drop base or ones with a flat base. If I got with the drop base, different companies make different amounts of drop, so wouldn't this change the size of spacer I need?

Also, I'm guessing I want a centered base and not an offset base, correct?

Here's a link to the one's from Jegs I was considering:

http://www.jegs.com/p/JEGS/JEGS-14-P...51908/10002/-1

And, here's a link to the Edelbrock one I was considering:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/EDL-1223

It seems the amount of drop is different.

The stock air cleaner setup left me scratching my head thinking why in the world would Dodge come up with this...I had similar sentiments about the axle seals in my Dana 44 axle up front that I haven't fixed yet.

thanks,
pf

Pete, I have that exact same Edelbrock RAC on my 01 5.2. Yes, it is a drop base, hence the need for a spacer from the top of the TB to the bottom of that RAC dish. They have a package of various size spacers,(they call them carb spacers IIRC) at Auto Zone or most other mass merch parts places. Lastly add an AEM Dry Flow 14x3 air cleaner, and your all set.

I have an elelbrock 14x3 also. It's a drop base. The advantage of this is more filter surface area while still being able to fit the air cleaner under the trucks cowling. Some will also argue that the drop base makes for smoother air flow.

i have the Edelbrock Pro-Flo and used a 1/2 inch spacer and it works perfect, performs better and sounds sick

PS an easy way to put it together is to use clear silicone in between the spacer and the base, otherwise it can be a pain in the ***, because they will try to come apart
also install the spacer/base and the filter all at once, believe me its easier that way, then on goes the top, and enjoy the power and sound

Ya, I guess the biggest question is the amount of drop distance. If you go to the Summit Racing website, they list the following amount of drops for the 14x3 RAC's in inches:

1.50
1.25
1.18
1.00
0.875
0.625
0.125

I had no idea they ranged some much. What's the "right" drop? I'm guessing anything over 1" is too much and less than .625 is too low. I'm asking because I like the looks of the 1" drop better than the Edelbrock one with the .625 drop.

thanks,
pf

Maroon, if you say the Pro-Flo works well with the 1/2" spacer, than I'll just go with that to take out the guess work. Also, thanks for the installation tips!

My set-up is exactly the same as Maroon's. Though, I found it easiest to put the spacer, base and filter element on the throttle body then to screw the S bolt in right before putting the top on. This took care of the tight squeez involved.

My setup is also the same as HammerDown's and Maroon's. Works like a charm!

Here are the part numbers for the ones we have, Chrome is 1221 and black is 1223, then get yourself an assortment of plastic spacers. All can be purchased at Autozone, Advanced, etc...

Goodluck buddy, you'll love the end product.

i was gonna get the black, but advanced didn't have it, just chrome, but i really ended up liking the chrome, other than the fact i can't keep it clean, now i just need to find a 318CID sticker for it
oh and that old skool carb sound when i crack the throttle open
