ok, drilling holes does not give you better performance, let me clear that up. when your running a high performance ignition the air in the cap can become statically charged. the hotter the air the easier it is for the charges to arc across the cap. msd recomends drilling a couple small holes in the cap to prevent this, it lest the super heated/charged air out, but the holes must be covered with some type of screen. ive known a bunch of buddies who did this after putting in a beefy coil or cd ignition. no, drilling holes does not make better performance, that was a misleading statement on my part. its more to prevent future problems. and siliconing the distributor cap could bring those problems on.

 

They should make a high performance cap with those features then.

edit - maybe we could install an old GM cap with the slide up door for the dwell tool and tap the cap for a temp sensor. whenever it gets too hot you could open the little door.

 

OMG, your right, I sold thousands of those GM caps when I worked at the old man's part's store back in the day. When you are racing you could open the door, when you are mudding or daily driving you could just leave it closed, Damn, I wish Ford would have thought of that.

 

my next mod is going to be a distributor cooler, because sometimes i get up to 30, maybe even 35 mph on my way to work. do you think i would need a bypass valve for the winter time so it doesn't get too cool. i'm afraid it might quench the spark.

 

It is actually quite easy to suck water into the dodge trannys. I cant really explain it right now, but if I can find any of the several threads I have read on PS about this I will link them. Basically, if the water is above the floor boards, the tranny can suck water in... and bye bye tranny once that happens. They don't last much longer.

 

i can understand water going down the dipstick tube.

but isn't the rest of it sealed, with no vents. or am i all wrong ?

 

Vented distributor caps have been around since the mid 1980's at least. The purpose is to prevent the air in it from ionizing. Don't ask me to explain this but just google "vented distributor caps". They came as original equipment and all replacements I have seen are vented.
