For people that didn't live through it, they don't realize the subtle little changes that these Rams went through in their production period. The early Rams up to 97 were really old school. Dodge was using a lot of old technology mixed in with some tweaking to modernize. I never minded it cause it's the stuff I grew up with from the 70's on up. Then in 98 they started adding little changes here and there leading up to the 3rd gens when they pulled them all together. That's why there are so many variations from 98 to 02. From 94 to 97 the trucks were relatively unchanged. 97's have the buzzer and it's for everything (lights, doors, keys, etc). I frankly don't mind it. My 09 Mustang has the "Ding" and that irritates me. Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding, SMASH!

I would assume that the chime changed in 98 along with all the other interior changes.
TO the OP, I know most of the posts haven't been truly on topic. With that, here is some advice. The buzz that you hear is still a mechanical buzz, and just like your horns, they will wear out over time. I know that most people want them just for the simple fact that it reminds them that they left the keys in the ignition, or left the lights on. I understand this.
I would pull the buzzer itself and see if it's seized up. In case you didn't know where it's at, it's in the interior fuse box, on the driver's side of the dash. IIRC, it should be located in the upper right corner. Hope this helps.
You all that complain about the chimers, You all should be glad. The newer vehicles have switched to a chime that can be heard throughout the car audio.

That sucks! Laramie you always have a way of making us feel fortunate.

Lol. I know. I try to be an optimist. Trust me though, the buzzer is there. Remember, I shoved a screwdriver through it to shut it up. I was pissed, and younger, not to mention, after trying to unsuccessfully tape the switch on the door in so that would shut it up, it all just became no hole barred. I went hunting.
