I'm not the original owner so who knows about what might have been. I thought about tracing it but it goes directly into the factory wire lomb so no.
If you look at the picture there's this bolt with some nuts on it right above this thing, it's hollow, has a spring in it inserted from the top (nothing holds the spring in) and this seems to fit right nice into the hollow bolt. But how/what that might do if there's something broken or missing here I don't know.

I did as much tracing back as I cared to do. Whatever it is IS factory because nobody would have gone to the trouble of hitting all the lombs and going where it goes under the dash, no way. It's a green wire, goes into a factory lomb where it picks up a black wire from another, then goes through the firewall through a factory grommet of it's own, then under the dash it becomes part of the huge factory harness.

Well the factory also does not use wire ties. If you are seeing them along the way, then I'd say someone went through a lot of work. Take another pic of what the top of the hollow bolt looks like.

I would bet that the wire itself is a factory live wire, but the purpose was not a factory job. The previous owner found a wire that did what he needed and spliced into it. That's why it looks factory but isn't. The factory would never use connectors like that. In older cars I would usually find a factory wire for whatever I needed, and tie into it, but now with all the computer controls and possible side effects, I won't mess with it.

its a hood switch for remote starter, that will disable the remote start when the hood is up. at least when it was in one piece anyways....

Bingo.

Either that or an alarm, although how they got it so neatly entombed with the factory wire is a feat, plus whatever happened to either is a mystery to me because, except for the tow brake, nothing looks tampered with on this truck.

BTW: Any obvious wire ties you see are from the audio power wire upgrade that just got done/redone, although you will find a few wire ties from the factory under your hood.
