Default 2000 Dodge Ram, need engine block heater

I just moved to North Dakota from the south and it has been suggested that I get a block heater for my Dodge Truck. I would rather not pay the dealer and do it myself. However, I am not too sure what type of block heater is required. Any info on this from anyone? Places to buy; advice on installation? Btw, the truck is a '00 1500, 5.9L, 4x4. Thanks.

You can either get one that you seperate one of your heater core lines and it installs inline with that or you can purchase one that requires removing a freeze plug and the block heater replaces that. It is a matter of choice and money. I have one that goes inline of my heater core line and it works phenominally.

Just my opinion....with temps getting lower than -30, you are going to want the freeze plug heater. I have the a circulating block heater (inline heater). Removed one of the threaded plugs from the front of the block and put a Y fitting in my heater hose. It works alright...but the freeze plug heaters will heat your engine block up twice as fast as the inline ones. So if you forget to plug your truck in and wake up, it will only take 20mins for your truck to heat up at -45 rather than an hour with the inline one.
