2000 Ram V10 transmission question
Hi all.
First off, I"m new to these boards, so let me introduce myself. I'm Cheers007, I own a 2009 Civic Si, 1987 Chrysler New Yorker with the EVA computer (yes it talks), and used to own a 2004 Ram 1500 V6 (which I sold last summer).
I'm looking to get a V10 Ram and stumbled on one that was a quad cab, 2000 Ram 2500, with 46k miles. Sounds great. The dealership is asking around $12k, which is outrageous considering it is 3 generations older than current.
My question to you all is, how are the transmissions on the v10's? I've tried searching these forums and don't find the clear answers I'm looking for. I know the transmissions on the 360's and 318 suck and will fail for one reason or another (I owned a 93 Intrepid and know what those 4 speed auto's go through) but are the transmissions different on the v10's?
With an Aux cooler, does it help prolong the life? What kinds of issues have you all had with the transmission, or the truck itself that is bound to happen with all v10's?
Thanks in advance.

I paid $8k for my fully loaded V10 with 102k miles in March. $12k is way high even with that low mileage. High BB is under $10k. Not many people out there looking for a truck that, at best, gets 7-10mpg. The 47RE tranny used on the V10s is pretty stout, but suffers from many of the same issues as the 46 used in v8s. Mine was replaced under warranty at around 30k and has been fine since. The V10s were designed to do one thing and do it well: tow heavy loads. The good thing is that the V10s are overbuilt and most of the 2500s have the HD cooling package. That means a huge radiator and a factory tranny cooler. My truck runs really cool, even in 100 degree heat with the A/C on and pulling a trailer. I have a tranny temp gauge and I have yet to see it above 160. 43k miles sounds pretty low, but even if correct he's asking way too much. Is it a Sport SLT+ like mine with extras like the camper and towing packages and leather interior? What condition is the paint in? I would look around some more and see what you can find. These trucks are not that popular right now and good deals are pretty easy to find. Also, if you don't have need for a V10 you might be better of with a V8 RAM. There's very little aftermarket for the V10s.
The transmission is tough as nails, it just shifts around weird. It shifts for no reason at all sometimes. Ive put mine through hell and it still works. You name it Ive done it as far as abuse to the engine and tranny.... 179,xxx miles and still going, but 12k is way too much for that. Get a cummins truck if you are going to spend that money.. they arent as fast but they get way better gas mileage and smell cool
And they leave a nice black sooty stream of smoke that is great for eluding whomever is following you.
Thank you all so much for all of your replies.
It is good to hear that the transmission is tough. I completely agree that price is way too high.
To answer your question, Miami, I do not believe it is the SLT as the pics don't show any leather, but it does have the overhead console and fog lights.
I spoke with one of the sales guys at that dealership and asked him why he had it so expensive. He said he would talk to his manager to see what can be done on that truck because it does seem that it is sitting on the lot too long. (obviously at that kind of price)
I remember a couple months ago my Honda dealership had a used Ram 2500 2004 Hemi quad cab SLT with 55k miles for around $12.5k. That was a super nice truck, but I couldn't get them to budge on the price and didn't get it.
I told the guy on the phone about that, and he said "wow that sounds strange as to why we have it marked at that price" so he will check today to see what can be done about that truck.
I don't know how the condition of the paint is or anything, I'm just going off of the ad.
I'm not looking into doing any aftermarket mods to it. I want to keep it stock. I'm also not looking to do much towing, I just want to have the power in case I ever need to and to do cool burnouts
Let me ask another question, how does the acceleration feel in these v10's?
One last question, is it just me or does the exhaust sound like a v6 (based on youtube videos only)? It seems the Ford v10 gas sounds more "manly" than the Dodge (don't get me wrong, I'm a dodge guy at heart)

+1. I have the smaller v8 and you'd never know it
THis is what my V10 sounds like. Definitely manly enough.

If that truck isn't completely decked out like mine then there's no way it is worth $12k no matter what the mileage is. Acceleration is excellent, but as I said earlier, these engines were designed for towing. Unlike the Viper V10, the truck V10 is a low rev, torque engine. It redlines at 4500 rpm compared to 6500 for the Viper. It makes more hp and torque than the diesel, but it is not a screamer by any means. I'm very happy with mine as I will soon be using it to haul a toy trailer and that's why I bought it.
