I have a question about the VIN. I know Z and 5 are for.

Z is the LD 5.9, and 5 is for the HD 5.9. Was the HD only used in the 3500s? Cause I got the build sheet for my truck and it lists "Heavy duty service group", but I got a vin Z.

I think it was the one they put into the 2500s as well, but I could be mistaken on that.

Here is a good reference, provided by LMC Truck, on a breakdown of the entire VIN.

My truck originally had a 5.9 in it and all the stickers support that but the guy i bought it from put a 5.2 in it because the 5.9 had rods blow through it. Hard to tell. I thought i had a 5.9 for the longest time before a talked to him about it. At first i was a little pissed about it but have since heard people seem to like the 5.2 more because it is close to the same power levels and the mileage is better. There are a few guys at work that have had a few of both and they seem to favor the 5.2. No idea why.

Crank dampners are different. 5.9 is thicker than the 5.2

Besides the vin and the rad sticker, there's a sticker on the door too called the Safety Cert. label. Shows a bunch of info.

If you don't have the stock engine, then it's a bunch of minor differences since the 318 and 360 are so alike. The engine ID is right by the left motor mount.
