Tranny Guru's, I need some help.
Hi guys, Newbie to your thread. Thanks for having me. My problem, I've got a 98 1500 4x4 with a smoked tranny. My rebuilders and junk yard tell me that it has to be replaced with a 98 or 99 model only. After searching, I suspect that other model trannys will work with slight modifications. Is anyone familiar with a write up on interchangeability, or can someone give me some guidance on this? I found a tranny that was just rebuilt a short time ago in a truck that has been rolled, but it is a 96 model. Any help/guidance would be greatly appreciated.
thanks again,
IMO, you would be much better off just paying more to have your current one rebuilt. Getting a used stocker out of the Junkyard is only going to give you another ticking time bomb on your hands. Might last 100 miles or 100,000 miles. You never know. Getting the one you have now rebuilt and beefed up a bit would be a sounder option. Not to mention you have the option to really make it stouter than stock configurations were.
Sound advice, no doubt, and I thank you for that. The tranny I found, was rebuilt less than 10K mi. ago, is supposed to be working perfectly, and is about $600 cheaper than having mine bench rebuilt. That is my incentive for asking these questions.
Is it worth the time and effort to try to move some sensors around? Are you going to be doing this yourself?
Another thing you don't know is what the quality of the rebuild was either....

Current owner says it's been working perfectly for near 10K mi., so I'm thinking that if it wasn't done properly, problems should have begin to show up already. To save $600, I am willing to change my sensors and your tires if need be, lol! Yes, i'll be doing it myself.
