holy crap that's a lot of rust. i don't know if you should check local junk yards, they would probably be rusted just as bad as yours. i would replace the whole thing. check out ebay.

Good for you! Your truck will love you for it, and you will get the benefit of a longer life out of it. It's a win, win situation.

im thinking about designing a way to block the spare up there, so the weight's not on the cable. it would have to be stupid simple, and easy to remove roadside.
my trailer hitch runs right along each side of the spare, im thinking about using a piece of strap steel that runs across each side, and under the spare, or something along those lines

I'm thinking along the same lines, the cable as the only device keeping the tire from falling out is clearly very dangerous.
Post back if you come up with anything, I'll do the same.

I agree, finding a usable winch at a junkyard would be like hitting the lotto - Besides, 1st gen Rams are not exactly easy to find in junkyards here.

There is one on ebay, about $100. http://tinyurl.com/okl235
I'm going to try to find out later today just how accessible the innards of this thing is.
Maybe these aren't meant to be serviceable, I guess I'm about to find out.

As long as no duct tape or velcro is involved, I'm willing to listen !

This weekend I went to 3 air shows FRI, SAT & SUN.
Each was a 90 mile round trip, didn't get on the freeway, but I was on some major surface roads going 50 mph + much of the time, with traffic almost always behind me.
I consider myself lucky that it waited for MON to pop off, on a small road, light traffic and no one directly behind me.

Got it out without too much complication, there are 4 drop in 13 mm bolts holding it in.
Looked like a potential nightmare, but it turned into a dream.
Just leaned back against the transfer case and broke lose each one with a hammer tap on the wrench, they spun out pretty easily.

This thing is not meant to be serviceable, so it looks like a new $100 OEM will have to do.
As you can see, rust, as I thought, was not a factor with the stainless cable itself ,,, But the retainer at the end of the cable is another matter, that looks to be the part that failed.
