Default Did the 46RE have an outboard filter?

Title pretty much sums it up, but I will add a little more.

Over the last few weeks, I've been putting together a list of basic maintenance parts together, and today, I went and picked up most of it.

I use Oriely's auto, and have always been happy with the service and correctness of the parts, but today makes me wonder a little bit. Firstly, when I went in, I started off with asking for a new pan gasket, of course they didn't have it, and that's to be expected. Then I ask for the filter.

Let me back up just a second here first. When I first asked for the gasket, I told the clerk I needed a pan gasket for the 46RE transmission. I guess that confused him enough. We had to go through and punch in the make and model. What ever, just get my my gasket.
This was an older guy, and he tells me that there is no way I have a 46RE in my truck. He tells me that I either have a NV3500, 36RE or 36RH I told him, that's a typo. We had a good 15 minute argument on this. .

I ended up getting an out board magnetic filter made by wix.

Did these trucks have this? I don't really think they ever did, and it's another typo in their parts catalog....
TIA.
(I did search, so no comments Miami. )

Here is a pic if anyone wants to see what I'm talking about.

that looks like a fuel filter to me. edit - ok, i llooked it up, its for transmissions.
http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlook...sionfilter.asp

but anyway, my 01 doesn't have any external filters, gas nor transmission.
i suppose it'll work, but you'll have to cut your hard line or quick connect hose.

i put a remote filter on mine. it uses the standard F1 or FL1? oil filter.

It's another typo in the catalog for the parts store.

It honestly doesn't look like something I would want to use in that situation IMO. Looks like it would be really easy for a hose to blow off or something. Oh well, lol good store credit.

i will actually work fine, although its a little pricey to replace. there's not an excessive amount of pressure on those lines. my cooler and remote filter are plumbed with rubber transmission hose and regular old clamps.

i used this one, but i don't like it because the fittings are straight up. 90* would be better.

Thanks for that, but... I'm not going to mess with it. I had the intentions of just doing a filter and fluid change on the tranny. That's all. At this point, I'm just doing mainteance to this truck to keep it running long enough. When I have the funding put back enough, I plan on moving into either the 3rd gen ranks or 4th gen. When I do, I'm laying down "dodgey" and she will hibernate until such a time that I can rebuild her from the ground up. She will be back, and she will be one powerful bitch.

Laramie, I'll give you one piece of advice from experience. Earlier this year I replaced the tranny filter and gasket and used the one from O'reillys. The gasket is a gray rubberized material but I didn't think much of it. When I opened up the pan I found that the OEM was a cork gasket, again didn't think much of it. Up to this point my tranny has always been bone dry (no drips). I hate drips! You know where this is going. So I went ahead and changed the filter, gasket and fluids. I have done tranny flush and fill before so this is not my first time. The only hassle I found this time is that no matter how much or how little I torque the bolts I still get little drips. I don't know if it's because the gasket is not cork, or if it's that the ATF+4 is all synthetic where the ATF+3 wasn't. I decided in a few miles to change it again and go with a cork gasket. Just a warning if the drippies matter to you.

As for your question, NO there is no outboard filter, just a rectangular paper thing inside the pan. They had mine in stock no trouble, it was a Frahm. Next time I may go MOPAR, Wix, or something else.

Interesting.....

I just got back from taking that other "filter" back, and got the right part this time. I looked at that rubber gasket, but now that you say that, I might have to order in a felpro. Yes, drippies **** me off, that is what's spurring this whole tangent to fix it. Dealing with a pumpkin leak, and the pan leak. I figure while I'm in there, I'll go ahead and change the filter and fluid, since I'll already lose the fluid. As it sits right now, I lose about 1 quart a month of ATF just from the pan leaking.

I just need to figure out what is causing the bolts to back off...
