I wouldn't have anything in principle against doing what you ask, so long as theres no expense to me.
Paypal, keep in mind, takes a 4% slice, so if you sent say $500, you'd have to send $517 for me to actually get $500.

Don't you have any out of state relatives/personal friends that would do this ?
Seems to me would be better all the way around.
Also worth while giving consideration to the thoughts in post #9, you had better be sure you are on solid ground to do this before making a move.

 

maybe try to buy the cat from another source other than an online parts retailer, like amazon or ebay. then once you get it, just find a mom and pop muffler shop. in my case, i took it to a shop similar to mexico, while i was in california, and had them rework my exhaust. they did a good job for a fair price.

 

You may want to do like I did with the paint. Take a weekend trip to vegas, smash up your cat so it looks like a rock hit it, and get a garage there to install a new one. Make a few phone calls first and ask if it is doable.

 

Well you could drive out here to the valley of the sun (Arizona) and pick it up from my place if you want to give it a shot.

Reply to: Ram15002ndGen My friend you want to talk about paint? you do not know the half of it. you should try getting auto body paints. it is the same thing NO oil based paints allowed. which is funny because the oil based paint would not soak into the skin. but thanks to our tree hugging friends we now get water based paint which thanks to the water will soak in to the skin.

reply to: kev2 CA smog testing involves sticking a sucker into your tail pipe which is hooked to a smog computer then run at about 2k RPMs for 2 min o2 value or the exhaust gases to high you fail too low you could fail. then they hook into your OBDII mostly to check to see if you turned off the engine light or other thinks with the stock settings.

Here's the deal. I am out here, So cal that is. I know you stated that you were looking for NON cali folks, but, I couldn't pass to tell you something that may be useful. I think you will find this very interesting.

- I just bought a HI FLOW CAT- it's legal, has both SMOG and CARB numbers printed on it and it was 256 bucks shipped to my home IN SO CAL. The GOOD CATS are out there, it's just a matter of finding them. They're on sale now but, going fast. This is NOT a direct fit as you will need to order or have two down pipes made and then have them welded.

- I just found a killer header for my Dodge truck that is 100% LEGAL, has 20-26 HP gain (same as long tubes w/o a CAT) with a CAT. It has SMOG and CARB numbers.

So, this stuff is coming around to where:

- we are seeing nice gains using TUNED components that only was available in off road components only

- there's 100% legal CATS made by Magnaflow for CALI residents that kick the OEM ones to the wayside.

For the illegal runners:

1. At time of SMOG test- if they find it NOT to pass- an inspection of all exhaust components is mandatory now. If your vehicle is found to be non- compliant to federal and state regulations for emissions, the SMOG tester is supposed to enter it into the machine. From there, it goes directly to the DMV. Then, you get a letter in the mail along with a hefty fine or, they may send someone out to really look at your vehicle. If they find it to be offensive, they tow it and impound it.

Now, I just found this out LAST WEEK. I too, was going to go with some parts that were not street legal until I spoke to many different SMOG testers and some mechanics at the dyno labs. They say that things are really heating up with illegal runners and, impound is one way to spread the fear.

I had watched my neighbor get pulled over. He's illegal- they towed it right there after the cops finished a road side inspection- truck was a goner. Big *** fine, trouble with the cops now as they stop him often. He's in his late 40s and doesn't drive to attract attention but, they got the ol' stink eye out for this fella now. It sucks for sure. But, what can you do? Pull off all the illegal stuff, SMOG it, then bring it home, tear it all off, and put the off -road use parts back on. What a pain. And, then you have to worry about the cops pulling your **** over due to just a light out or some dark window tint. Cops have a field day with that stuff. Then they start looking, checking, looking underneath etc. Next thing, your watching them tow your truck.

Another engineer I used to work with was in his mid twenties or so. He had an SRT- modded and illegal. He got nabbed and ever since, they have been harassing him. He finally couldn't take it anymore and sold the car.

out here in Illinois, and Indiana we don't have it that bad

 

Every year, with things going more "green" they are making it harder and harder for those who own older vehicles. There is no way around it. You just have to go with OEM or after market parts that are 100% legal that offer the performance boost.

I am going to retune my PCM for performance with an SCT tuner and, as long as all the components are legal, and, the thing is running great- it will pass SMOG. At least, that's what I have been told. We will find out next May for sure!
